Excel 2007 has a new file format. Why? For added safety, reduce risk of damage, reducing the size and number of other new features.
In Excel 2007 can open files created in earlier versions of Excel from Excel 95 to Excel 2003.
old files remain so unless you decide otherwise. If you open a file created in an earlier version, when you save the file and the work to be done on it, automatic configuration dialog box is Save As to save keeping format original. If you started in Excel 2003, Excel 2007 will save to 2003 format unless you specify another option.
New features warn you if you save the file as old. When you save a file with the format of a previous version, a Compatibility Checker tells you if any of the 2007 version are not compatible with the previous version.
Share documents between versions by using a converter. If you create a file and stores it in 2007 with 2007 format. When they click on your document, asked if they want to download a converter that allows them to open the document.
The file format of Excel 2007 is based on XML (Extensible Markup Language ).
